The public recorded a sky phenomenon with twin suns, as if there were two suns from the West and East, occurring in Makassar, Sulawesi on Sunday (19/1/2020).
An amateur astronomer, Marufin Sudibyo explained that an event which appears as if the sun is in the two cardinal directions, is called the Sun Dog, or the optical phenomenon parhelion or parhelia. The phenomenon of optical parhelia is an ordinary phenomenon, although Marufin admitted, it is rather rare when compared to the appearance of a solar halo. "This phenomenon is common, but there is no documentation yet. However, qualitatively it is rather rare when compared to the Solar Halo," he said.
How is this Parhelion phenomenon formed? The phenomenon of twin suns is an atmospheric optical phenomenon with the same mechanism as the process of forming a solar halo or rainbow. "The process of forming Parhelia (Sun Dog) is similar to Halo Matahari," said Marufin when contacted by Kompas.com, Tuesday (21/1/2020). It's just that, said Marufin, during the formation of the Solar Halo, the position of the Sun is at a quite large altitude, often even around its upper culmination point. Meanwhile, in Parhelia, the sun's altitude is quite low and it is close to the horizon.
"As in the Sun Halo, the clouds and the Sun are in front of us," he said. This parhelion phenomenon occurs due to the refraction of sunlight by tall, thin clouds called Citrus clouds, which contain micro ice grains with a hexagonal plate structure inside the Cirrus clouds. The resulting rays of refraction and scattering make the sun appear as a thin circle of white light, especially if the clouds are very thin, with two bright lights that are almost parallel to the position of the sun at that time. Even in cloudy skies, sometimes only one point of light is visible. Also, the distance between the sun and each point of light is always 22 degrees. "Similar to the diameter, the halo of the sun appears," he said. Sun Dogs are not a sign of natural disasters Parhelion or sun dogs often form in areas that are being shaded by Cirrus clouds, while the local Sun's altitude is quite low. So, said Marufin, in simple terms Sun Dog or twin suns are often seen in the morning or evening. Regarding the duration, this celestial phenomenon of the Sun Dog depends on the position of the sun and the dynamics of the Cirrus clouds themselves, some are up to hours and some are just short. As emphasized by Marufin, the phenomenon of sun dogs or twin suns is a beautiful and interesting phenomenon, but it has never been associated with 'keprabon revelations'. In the Javanese tradition, the revelation of keprabon is in ndaru, a bluish-white flash of light in the night sky, which is associated as a harbinger of impending disaster. As well as in the West Asian tradition, said Marufin, Keprabon's revelations are precisely based on the positions of the planets in certain constellations which are the study of pseudoscience called astrology. This means that the existing sun dog or twin sun phenomenon has nothing to do with an impending disaster in that area.
